What Happens to My Phone System If My Internet Goes Down?
It is the most common objection to switching from a traditional phone system to VoIP: but what if my internet goes down? It is a legitimate question. VoIP calls travel over the internet — so if the internet is unavailable, calls cannot travel over it. But the real answer is more nuanced than a simple yes or no, and there are several layers of protection that mean internet downtime rarely means phone downtime for a prepared business.
If your office internet connection goes down and you have no failover in place, inbound calls to your business number will hit the system — but will not be able to reach your office phones because they are offline. Configured correctly: calls route to your mobile device via DiaVoice Go over cellular data, to a backup number, or to your AI receptionist which handles the call from the cloud. Not configured: callers may go to voicemail or experience issues. The cloud itself does not go down — your DiaVoice system continues operating in the cloud even when your office internet is unavailable.
Option 1 — DiaVoice Go on mobile is the simplest solution. DiaVoice Go runs on your cell phone over cellular data. If your office Wi-Fi goes down, your cell data keeps working. Calls route to your mobile automatically. No gap in service.
Option 2 — configure a failover number in your DiaVoice settings. When the system cannot reach your office phones, calls automatically forward to a designated backup number. Takes 60 seconds to set up.
Option 3 — a 4G/5G cellular router provides backup internet connectivity when your primary connection fails. Most modern businesses with any serious uptime requirements use this. The phone system switches over automatically.
Option 4 — if DiaVoice AI is answering your calls, internet downtime in your office is nearly invisible to callers. The AI operates from the cloud — it answers calls, takes messages, and sends you notifications regardless of your office internet status. Your callers never know anything is wrong.
Traditional landline phones have their own vulnerabilities — physical line cuts, central office outages, and weather damage. They are not immune to downtime. And they have zero cloud failover options. VoIP with proper failover configuration is more resilient than most traditional phone systems — not less. The key word is proper configuration. A VoIP system with no failover planning has a real vulnerability. A VoIP system with DiaVoice Go, AI receptionist, and a failover number configured is extremely resilient.
VoIP phones require power — if your office loses power, desk phones go offline, but DiaVoice Go on your cell phone continues working as long as you have cellular service. Contact us at (256) 724-3100 and we will walk you through configuring failover routing for your account — takes about 10 minutes.
DiaVoice AI keeps answering your calls even when your office internet is down. Starting at $15/month. Call (256) 690-0090 or visit diavoice.net.
